This is a computer-generated calendar intended for use with the Liturgy of the Hours tutorial provided by The Rosary Shop and Simple Way Limited Partnership and Lay Apostolate. The tutorial is available in print with an audio CD or as a free download.
The calendar shows seasons, mass readings and feasts per the universal Roman calendar. Some solemnities and other feasts are observed on (moved to) Sundays by particular dioceses and national conferences.
Items in parentheses are typically not celebrated due to another observation of greater priority on the same day and are included for informative purposes only.
Also, the Catholic Church routinely skips and rearranges verses for liturgical readings. For the purposes of personal, prayerful reading, the passages are noted herein as contiguous, straight-through reads. Optional mass readings for optional feasts are not inlcuded at this time.

- Why doesn't the calendar start on January 1?
- Because the Church year begins on the first day of Advent, not the secular New Year.
- Why do some days have extra Mass readings?
- In most cases, one set of readings is for a specific service on that day, like a vigil or feast of a particular saint, and the other set of readings is the "default" readings for other Masses on that day.
- Why do you use the NRSV?
- The (N)RSV is a pretty good English translation and the publisher is generous in its allowances for non-commercial online use. You are obviously welcome to use whatever translation you wish in your personal readings and prayers.
- Why are some of the dates different than how they are celebrated at my parish?
- Many dioceses and entire national conferences add (or omit) various feasts, or move them to nearby Sundays. The listings in our calendar are how they are listed in the universal Church calendar.
- The readings at Mass were different than as listed here. Why?
- The listings on this calendar are the normative or standard readings for any given day and major feasts. However, priests have the freedom to substitute other readings (within certain limits) depending on what other feasts are being observed on a given day -- the color might also change based on the feast being observed. In addition, there are going to be slight differences as we list the readings (ideally) as straight through reads for personal prayer, whereas they are often chopped and rearranged a bit for liturgical use.
- Where can I get the Liturgy of the Hours prayer books?
- They are available from many online bookstores, direct from their respective publishers, and you can order them from The Rosary Shop, too.
- What are the differences between the prayer books?
- They all contain the main Morning and Evening prayers (four week cycle), and a week of Night Prayers. The shorter books include some optional prayers for major seasons like Advent, Lent and Easter, whereas the 4-volume set has entire books devoted to the individual seasons. The main difference (bulk-wise) is the presence of the Office of Readings, which is found in its entirety only in the 4-volume set. The 4-volume set is more expensive and complicated, but worth the effort due to the presence of the Office of Readings. - In the daily summary you only list the season and week for the Liturgy of the Hours Psalter. What about a page number?
- Once you are familiar with praying the Liturgy of the Hours, all you need to know is what season we are in, what week it is, what day it is, and (optionally) whether there are any special feasts being observed today. In the interest of brevity, we have made sure that all of that information is found in the daily summary at the top of each page. If you subscribe to our e-mail list, you will also receive a daily e-mail that includes the approximate page numbers for the most popular Liturgy of the Hours prayer books.
- Your information doesn't match what person X says it should be!
- Our goal is to make this resource as useful as possible for personal prayer, not necessarily precisely following every little nuance that might be required for a public liturgy. However, show us how our information varies substantially from the universal calendar or lectionary (or how it could otherwise be improved), and we'll be happy to make any needed changes.
- Why don't you provide the complete text of the Liturgy of the Hours online?
- Others are already doing that with sufficient competence.
- It is a lot of work to program it.
- Online reading is fine when you don't have an alternative, but we prefer (and recommend) the experience of using the actual prayer books when possible.
